Gut Health

Travelers should be prepared to encounter some foods and beverages to which they are not accustomed. Although caution is taken to educate our hosts about food safety for Americans, occasionally a traveler will feel less than perfect gastrointestinal homeostasis. The wise traveler to a foreign country prepares their gut prior to departure and takes care to maintain gastrointestinal health throughout the trip. Avoiding street food, foods from unknown sources, items prepared in a home and obviously drinking only bottled water are essential for a happy stomach on the mission field.

Gut Preparation

One week prior to departure, the wise traveler begins to prepare. Creating a nice probiotic balance can prepare your system to perform optimally should you come in contact with pathogens or other disagreeable foods. Probiotics can be purchased at most vitamin stores. High quality Yogurt or Kambucha drink can also establish a good flora (good bugs in your intestines) before you travel. Eating foods for a few days prior to departure that are easily compatible with your system also enable optimal gut health. Antacids, Pepto-Bismol, and other digestive aids should be considered as essentials for those with concerns.

1. Probiotics for 1 week

2. Yogurt or Kambucha

3. Antacids, Pepto-Bismol, Digestive Aids

4. Avoid Street Food

Water

Drink only bottled water!

Boiled water as in coffee is typically fine but is better if made with your bottled water.

Rinse all fruits with bottled water prior to consumption.
